The Australian Government has imposed targeted sanctions on 60 vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” according to an official statement from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs on June 18.

This marks the first time Australia has sanctioned the shadow fleet, which Russia uses to bypass international sanctions and sustain its unlawful war against Ukraine.

The vessels operate under deceptive practices such as flag-hopping, disabling tracking systems, and lacking proper insurance—tactics that enable the illicit trade of Russian oil and other sanctioned goods.

“These sanctions underscore Australia’s unwavering commitment to holding Russia and its enablers accountable for the illegal invasion of Ukraine,” the statement reads.

The sanctions have been introduced in coordination with key international partners, including Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Their aim is to deprive Russia’s war economy of critical oil revenue.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Australia has imposed more than 1,400 sanctions.

Earlier, captured Australian national Oscar Jenkins has been formally charged by Russian authorities for participating in combat on behalf of Ukraine. The former schoolteacher from Victoria now faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
