Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on May 28, during a joint conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, that Germany and Ukraine will sign a memorandum for the purchase of Ukrainian-made long-range weapons systems.

Additionally, Berlin will provide financial support to maintain Starlink operations in Ukraine.

“This is the beginning of a new form of military-industrial cooperation between our countries, which has significant potential,” Merz said.

He reiterated Germany’s previous stance on long-range strikes: “There will be no restrictions on long-range weapons. Ukraine will be able to fully defend itself and target military objectives beyond its borders.”

The Chancellor emphasized that Germany will do everything possible to ensure that Nord Stream 2 never becomes operational.

He further stated that while he could not disclose the details of the support, German assistance would be increased.

At the same time, Merz avoided directly answering a question about possible Taurus missile deliveries: “We will maintain and increase our military assistance.”

On May 9, it was revealed that the new German government has decided to significantly limit the release of information regarding future arms shipments to Ukraine.
