Germany plans to send a military support vessel to patrol Arctic waters by the end of the year, in what it describes as a response to increased Russian military activity in the region.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius made the announcement on June 30 during a visit to Denmark, as reported by European Pravda.

He pointed to growing concerns over Russia’s expanding operations in the Arctic, particularly its submarine activity.

“Russia is militarizing the Arctic, especially through an increase in submarine activity,” Pistorius said. “This year, Germany will demonstrate its presence in the North Atlantic and the Arctic.”

The planned deployment is part of an operation called Atlantic Bear. According to Pistorius, a German support vessel will depart from Iceland, make stops in Greenland and Canada, and participate in joint exercises with regional allies.

“Along the route, we will conduct training with our partners in the region, and we have planned the first entry of a German military ship into Nuuk, Greenland,” Pistorius stated.

Germany will also contribute to Canadian-led Arctic exercises by deploying “maritime patrol aircraft, submarines, and frigates,” Pistorius added.

Previously, it was reported that six NATO nations—including Sweden, the UK, France, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland—will contribute to the newly created Forward Land Forces (FLF) structure in Finland.
