Slovak Parliament Urges Government to Reject Further Russia Sanctions

Slovakia’s parliament approved a resolution calling on the government to oppose additional international sanctions against Russia. The vote was largely boycotted by opposition parties, Noviny reported on June 5.
The resolution, introduced by the Slovak National Party, claims that sanctions and trade restrictions have negatively impacted Slovakia’s economy — raising energy prices, disrupting supply chains, and weakening industrial competitiveness.
The document urges Slovak representatives in international organizations to reject new sanctions and instead prioritize energy market stabilization, price volatility reduction, and the protection of national interests.
The resolution passed with the support of 51 out of 76 lawmakers present, including all SNS deputies, most members of the Smer-SD party, several from Hlas-SD, and a number of independents. Only one MP—Jan Ferenčák of Hlas-SD—voted against it. Twenty-three lawmakers abstained, while opposition parties opted not to participate in the vote.
Earlier, the European Union had officially adopted its 17th package of sanctions against Russia, intensifying pressure on Moscow in response to its ongoing war against Ukraine.
According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, the new measures target nearly 200 vessels linked to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet and also address hybrid threats and human rights violations.
