President Donald Trump indicated during a joint appearance with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on June 5 that he has a personal timeline in mind for potentially imposing sanctions on Russia as the war in Ukraine continues without resolution.

“It’s in my brain, the deadline,” Trump said at the White House, suggesting he has a specific plan in mind but stopped short of disclosing further details.

The president mentioned that he had warned Russian leader Vladimir Putin not to retaliate after Ukraine carried out drone strikes on several Russian airfields.

“If I see somebody’s out of line, if Russia’s out of line, you’ll be amazed,” Trump added. “Remember this, they like to say that I’m friends with Russia. I’m not friends with anybody.”

Trump also spoke strongly about the consequences of the war, pointing to both cultural loss and human cost.

“They’ve taken away the culture of a country [Ukraine]. They’ve taken away the heritage of a country. It’s a terrible thing. But most importantly, again, is the death. 5,000 plus people a week, soldiers, are being killed.”

Earlier, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he spoke by phone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The conversation focused on Russia’s war against Ukraine, including a recent Ukrainian strike called Operation “Spiderweb,” on Russian strategic bombers, as well as growing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.
