Despite delays from 2023, Belgium is finally set to receive its first F-35, sparking optimism for the forthcoming transfer of additional F-16s to Ukraine, according to Defense Express on June 6.

The first F-35A fighter jet for Belgium’s air force has been rolled out of Lockheed Martin’s factory, marking a significant milestone that brings Belgium closer to receiving additional F-16s for Ukraine. The F-35 is now undergoing testing and final preparations, with delivery to Belgium expected this fall, as part of a total order of 38 units.

According to Defense Express, the completion of the first F-35 marks a significant step for Belgium, signaling the start of deliveries and the full transition to next-generation fighter jets. Initially, these aircraft were expected to join the Belgian Air Force in 2023, but due to various delays and production issues, the delivery will occur this year.

This development also directly impacts the planned transfer of Belgian F-16s to Ukraine as part of military aid. As more fifth-generation jets arrive in Belgium, the government will likely be more inclined to send additional older, operational aircraft to Ukraine.

Under a bilateral agreement between Ukraine and Belgium, F-16 deliveries are expected to occur by 2028. While different timelines have been discussed, the first F-16 parts are anticipated to arrive in 2025, with fully operational jets hoped to be delivered to Ukraine by early 2026.

The timeline for the F-16s’ arrival in Ukraine appears to align with Belgium’s plans for the F-35A. If Lockheed Martin can accelerate production, Ukraine may receive additional aircraft sooner.

However, any further production setbacks could extend delivery times, though the new F-35 radar system is unlikely to cause delays to this contract, Defense Express reported.

In addition to operating the F-35, Belgium is also involved in its production. Other European countries are awaiting their orders, and nations like Germany are already selecting weapons to equip their incoming jets.

Earlier, it was announced that the final batch of Dutch F-16 fighter jets designated for Ukraine departed the Netherlands, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defense on May 26.

The aircraft left Volkel Air Base for Belgium, where they will undergo final preparations before delivery. With this shipment, the Netherlands has completed its donation of 24 F-16s to support Ukraine’s defense.
