Denmark has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s accession to the European Union during its upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU, according to Reuters on June 19.
The country will take over the rotating presidency from Poland on July 1 for a six-month term.
Speaking at a press conference in Copenhagen, Danish Minister for European Affairs Marie Bjerre emphasized Denmark’s determination to keep Ukraine’s EU aspirations on the agenda, despite ongoing political hurdles.
“Unfortunately, Hungary continues to block [Ukraine’s EU membership], but we are doing our best to increase pressure and to encourage Ukraine to carry out the necessary reforms,” Bjerre said.

She also expressed Denmark’s readiness to swiftly move forward with accession negotiations once the process is unblocked.
“When the time comes to open concrete negotiation chapters, we’ll be ready to close them quickly,” she added.
Reuters also notes that Denmark aims to build consensus among EU countries on the bloc’s climate targets for 2040 during its presidency.
Previously, it was reported that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has urged Hungary to demonstrate mutual respect and restraint, accusing the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Viktor Orbán’s government of undermining bilateral ties by echoing Russian narratives.
