Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has condemned presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki for stating that Poland would never support Ukraine’s accession to NATO. Tusk called the position tantamount to treason.

Tusk made the remarks during an appearance on the TVN24 program Fakty po Faktach on May 22.

The PM was addressing a recent conversation between presidential candidate Nawrocki and Sławomir Mentzen, leader of the far-right Confederation coalition, during which Nawrocki signed an eight-point declaration. Among the pledges, Nawrocki committed to opposing Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

Tusk called it “one of the biggest scandals of this campaign.”

“As you may recall, there were very few instances of full consensus or solidarity between the late President Lech Kaczyński and me when I was prime minister—our relationship was mostly marked by political conflict and confrontation.

But when it came to Ukraine, its sovereignty, its pro-Western orientation, and its path toward NATO membership, we stood in complete agreement,” Tusk said.

Tusk said that Nawrocki is undermining and effectively discarding one of the most important and constructive decisions made by the late President Lech Kaczyński, calling it a fundamental matter of national security.

“The last thing Poland should do is fulfill or support Putin’s demands,” Tusk stressed. “A presidential candidate who, simply to appease Mentzen, publicly declares that Poland will never agree to Ukraine joining NATO, there is no better term for that than treason.”

At the same time, Tusk reiterated that Poland will not send its soldiers to Ukraine.

In an interview published on May 16, Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Piotr Łukasiewicz stated that Poland is preparing its 47th military aid package for Ukraine, valued at approximately €200 million.
