A Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance unit from the “Chornyi Lis” Brigade spotted and helped direct a precision strike against a rare and powerful Russian self-propelled artillery system—the 2S7 Pion, as shown in a video, released by Ukraine’s Ground Forces on June 14.

The high-value target, worth over $1 million, was destroyed by a neighboring Ukrainian artillery unit after coordinates were relayed from the drone team.

The 2S7 Pion (also known as the M-1975 in NATO reporting) is a Soviet-era super-heavy self-propelled howitzer, originally designed to destroy hardened military targets, key infrastructure, and nuclear weapon systems far behind enemy lines.

Its main gun is the massive 203mm 2A44 cannon, capable of firing a range of munitions—including high-explosive, rocket-assisted, cluster, and concrete-piercing shells.

With a maximum firing rate of 1.5 rounds per minute and a limited onboard ammunition capacity of just four shells, the Pion relies on support vehicles for sustained fire missions. Depending on the ammunition type, its effective range spans from 13 to 47 kilometers.

The howitzer is built on a modified seven-roadwheel tracked chassis, based on the T-80 tank design, and powered by a combination of components from the T-72 and T-80 platforms.

Its main projectile—a 203mm high-explosive fragmentation shell—weighs approximately 110 kg and carries 18 kg of explosive charge, designed to deliver blows to fortified positions.

Earlier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that Ukrainian forces have destroyed 6,186 Russian artillery systems, bringing the total to 19,236 since the beginning of 2024.
